Established in 1879, the Powells Point Christian Church initially met in a small school house. The congregation’s first church building was built in 1885 and was sold in 1910 as the congregation had outgrown the building. The current building under the direction of James Sumrell, was completed during September 1910.
The auditorium, which was built at that time, is the same that stands on the site today. Although now covered in vinyl siding, the church has retained many of its original features such as the arched windows of colored art glass and the two story tower block with a peaked roof and circular art glass windows.
